Dr. Lori  Howell is a board certified, licensed acupuncturist, board certified herbalist and certified Asian Body Therapist. Dr. Howell first developed an interest in East Asian Medicine while living in Asia where she witnessed successful holistic healthcare without toxicity or side effects. She is a strong advocate of using holistic healthcare as preventative medicine, as complementary medicine and when appropriate as primary healthcare.

 

In Fine Fettle Lori HowellDr. Howell has a Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, San Diego and a Masters of Science of Traditional Oriental Medicine (MSTOM) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Chicago. In addition, Lori has completed advanced studies at Zhejiang University of TCM at Hangzhou, China and studied Thai Bodywork at Buntautuk Traditional Medicine Hospital in Chiangmai, Thailand. Her practice focuses on — but is not limited to — the treatment of:

  • menopausal/perimenopausal symptoms
  • depression/anxiety/stress

  • back pain/general musculoskeletal pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • digestive and respiratory disorders
  • PMS
  • dermatology
  • cancer care

Treatments are tailored to the individual to treat the whole person (not only symptoms) and may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, bodywork and other adjunctive modalities, such as cupping, gua sha and moxibustion.

 

Dr. Howell has been on faculty at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine since 2006, teaching acupuncture, herbology, treatment of disease and clinical studies. She enjoys the connection with students and facilitating the advancement of Chinese medicine studies in the US. Lori is a member of Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ILAAOM), International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine (IASTAM), Northern Thai Traditional Medicine Club (Chiangmai, Thailand). She also serves on the board of Himalaya Project, working to preserve Traditional Tibetan medicine and education in the Dolpo region of Nepal. Lori loves to travel (usually with a backpack), spend time outdoors and read.

Jason Cox received his Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, IL In addition, he is also a licensed massage therapist specializing in the Asian modalities of Tui Na and Shiatsu, and uses the combination of acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine to achieve therapeutic results in the care of his patients. During his education, his internships included several semesters of specialization in Japanese Style Meridian Therapy and orthopedic acupuncture with a focus on musculoskeletal issues and pain relief. He also spent a year following and learning from acupuncturist, herbalist, and mentor, Frank Scott, LAc., in his clinic in Evanston, IL where he focused on Chinese Herbal Formula recommendations and preparation. He also has several years of experience working in an Integrative Medicine environment where he worked alongside, and in conjunction with, other practitioners such as chiropractors, nutritionists, and physical therapists. In addition to maintaining a private acupuncture and massage practice in Evanston, IL, Jason also manages the Herbal Dispensary at Pacific College sourcing their bulk herbs, granular formulas, and patent medications.

 

jason-cox-workingHis interest in complementary medicine began over 15 years ago when he began to look closely at health benefits he had attained through changes in diet, yoga, and qi gong practice. While doing volunteer work in South America, he observed and worked with nearby local villagers who maintained medicinal herb gardens and foraged from the surrounding countryside in order to prepare topical and internal medicines in order to treat fellow villagers.

 

He is passionate about Asian Medicine and the role it can play in the scope of healthcare options. He acts as an educator to inform the population of his medicine’s safety, viability, and benefits, and is an active advocate of legislation that will provide accessibility of Asian Medicine to a larger patient base. He is currently a member of the Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ILLAOM).

 

In addition to his current passion for Asian medicine, Jason holds degrees in Fine Art (with an emphasis in painting and drawing) and philosophy. He enjoys creating artwork, writing, cooking, and conducting research on the many subjects that interest him. Jason looks forward to opportunities when he can travel, go on long hikes, camp, or spend time in the great outdoors. He is an avid home cook and a practitioner of yoga, qi gong, and tai chi.

Maria Cristina (Torres) Moore is the founder of Integral-Alternative LLC, and who is one of a small select number of healthcare providers in the US that is both a trained MD and a board certified acupuncturist/herbalist.  She received her Medical Degree and a Certificate in Clinical Pharmacology from UNAM Autonomous University in her native Mexico and her MS degree in Oriental Medicine here in Chicago. Maria Cristina also practices the less invasive and virtually pain-free form of Japanese Acupuncture in addition to the traditional Chinese style.

Maria fosters a feeling of trust in her patients as she listens to their concerns and creates solutions tailored to the patient’s personal needs. Maria Cristina collaborates with other healthcare practitioners and integrative physicians to support patients in restoring their whole health.

Jennifer Hartmann attended University of Illinois at Chicago where she graduated with distinction with a B.A. in Anthropology, as well as Political Science. While here, she particularly connected with the subfield of Medical Anthropology and read extensively beyond the required curriculum.  Jennifer’s Undergraduate work resulted in a strong knowledge of biological, ecological, and cultural factors that influence human behavior, and included theoretical approaches, practical methods for enhancing cross-cultural understanding, social research, qualitative interviewing and fieldwork, and quantitative methods.

Following her Undergraduate work, Jennifer was offered a position clerking in a law firm, and then a position working in an environmental non-profit agency. While she enjoyed working in legal and non-profit environments, Jennifer wished to return to her studies in medicine.  She traveled to Spain and walked 200 miles from León to Santiago de Compostela to clear her head and afterwards, enrolled in a four-year full-time Masters program at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago, IL. Here she studied East Asian medicine, and graduated with honors.

 

Jennifer is a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Illinois and a board certified Chinese herbalist. She utilizes narrative medicine, acupuncture, Chinese herbs and clinical massage to restore health and balance. Jennifer is a doctoral candidate at Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Jennifer is passionate about the value of energy therapies, as well as evidence-based medicine and strives to offer her patients the most complete care possible.

 

When she’s not working with patients, Jennifer enjoys walking in nature, reading, painting, studying languages, meditating and drinking copious amounts of tea!
